When you’re searching for childcare in Mortdale, you’re not just looking for availability, you’re looking for a place that feels right. A place with heart. A place with history. A place you can trust.
For over 40 years, Edelweiss Child Care Centre has been part of the Mortdale community and for the past 25+ years, it has been lovingly owned and operated by one local family who have dedicated their lives to early childhood education.
An Extension of Family Since 1999
Edelweiss Child Care Centre has been operating in Mortdale for more than four decades, becoming a trusted name in local early learning. In September 1999, Carolyn and Michael purchased the centre with a dream of creating something truly special.
Carolyn was already an experienced Early Childhood Teacher having worked for many years within the school teaching system as well as in a Specialist Behavioural Unit. Her passion for supporting children’s development academically, emotionally and socially led her to pursue her dream of owning a childcare centre where she could work directly with children every day in a nurturing, family-oriented environment.
What they created wasn’t just a long day care centre in Mortdale it was a community.
Carolyn’s eldest daughter Lisa followed in her mother’s footsteps. After completing university, she joined the team in 2000. Fast forward 25 years and Lisa is now the Centre Director, overseeing daily operations and continuing the family’s commitment to high-quality early childhood education.
In fact, over the years, all four of Carolyn and Michael’s daughters have worked at the centre in various roles during their university studies and later while raising their own young families. Edelweiss truly lives its values as an extension of family.

Empowering Young Minds Through Play-Based Learning
Its understandable that walking your little one through the gates for the first time can feel overwhelming for both of you. Separation anxiety is real. But after meeting the warm, experienced team at Edelweiss, families often feel an immediate sense of reassurance.
Children are placed in one of two thoughtfully designed learning environments:
Early Learners Room (2–3 years)
A play-based program focused on socialisation, emotional regulation and cooperative play skills building the foundations of confidence and belonging.
Preschool Room (3.5–6 years)
A dedicated Preparation for School program, designed by highly trained and experienced senior teaching staff in conjunction with the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). This ensures children are well prepared for a smooth and confident transition to primary school.
The centre places strong emphasis on:
- Early literacy and numeracy
- Emotional development
- Creativity and curiosity
- Social skills and independence
- School readiness
All delivered within a stimulating yet nurturing environment to ease any feelings that arise when it comes to separating from your little one.
“Edelweiss feels like a second home for our child. The educators genuinely care and the
sense of community is amazing.”
The Power of Choosing the Right Early Learning Centre
There’s something powerful about the early years of a child’s life. They’re not just learning their ABCs or how to count, they’re learning who they are in the world.
When children experience high-quality early childhood education, the impact stays with them. You begin to see it in the small but meaningful ways: the shy child who slowly finds their voice and grows in confidence. The toddler who learns to share, negotiate and build friendships. The preschooler who starts recognising letters asking curious questions and stepping into school with excitement instead of fear.
Strong early learning environments help nurture greater confidence, stronger social skills, richer language development and smoother transitions into primary school. Just as importantly, they foster emotional resilience, the ability to manage feelings, solve problems and adapt to new situations.
But beyond programs, frameworks and school readiness checklists, what truly matters is how a place makes you feel as a parent.
Because when you walk into a centre and feel warmth, when educators greet your child by name, when leadership is consistent and when familiar faces have been there for years that sense of stability is priceless.
At Edelweiss, families often describe the centre as feeling like a “second home.” With long-standing educators, bilingual staff and steady, family-led leadership, children experience continuity and connection during some of their most formative years.
For families in Mortdale and surrounding suburbs, choosing early education here isn’t simply about securing childcare. It’s about becoming part of a community. It’s about knowing your child is genuinely known, supported and celebrated every single day as they grow into confident, capable little people ready to take on the world.
“Choosing a family-run centre was important to us, and Edelweiss has exceeded our
expectations in every way.”

A Trusted Childcare Centre in Mortdale
For many local families, the search often begins the same way late at night, scrolling and typing “childcare in Mortdale” or “preschool near me” into Google, hoping to find a place that feels right. Some are looking specifically for long day care near Mortdale that fits around work hours. Others are focused on finding a strong school readiness program in the St George area that will gently prepare their child for the transition to primary school.
And that’s where Edelweiss quietly stands out.
Offering a high-quality, privately owned early learning environment for children aged 2–6 years, the centre has become a trusted choice for families wanting both education and genuine care. It’s not just about supervision, it’s about creating a space where children feel secure enough to explore, learn and grow with confidence.
Open from 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday and operating 49 weeks of the year (closing only on public holidays and for three weeks over Christmas), Edelweiss provides the reliability working families need while still maintaining the warmth and personal touch of a family-run centre.
For many parents in Mortdale and surrounding suburbs, that balance of flexibility, quality education and heartfelt care makes all the difference.
A Proud Part of the Mortdale Community
For over 25 years under the current ownership and over 40 years in operation Edelweiss Child Care Centre has quietly supported generations of local families.
It’s not a corporate chain.
It’s not a faceless service.
It’s a family-run early learning centre built on passion, experience and community spirit.
And when it comes to choosing childcare in Mortdale, sometimes the greatest reassurance comes from history and from knowing that the same family who poured their heart into the centre decades ago is still there today, guiding the next generation.
Because when a childcare centre is built by family for families, it shows.
