The moment a child is born, the mother is also born. She never existed before. The women existed, but the mother is something completely new – Unknown.

  • Why every child must experience Oatley Park

Located in the leafy suburb of Oatley in Sydney’s South is the all inclusive Oatley adventure Playground.

Standing proudly within 45 Hectares of stunning bushland overlooking Lime kiln Bay wetlands home to many types of ducks and other water birds, Georges River and Jew Fish Bay you will find the all inclusive Oatley adventure playground. Designed with mostly natural elements in mind the playground design has clearly incorporated the surrounding landscape as much as possible. The playground includes many features including a flying fox complete with a harnessed seat for younger thrill seekers, a spectacular climbing structure you need to see to believe, allowing only the bravest to climb and weave their way through to reach the enclosed super slide, a toddler play area with musical instruments, a teenage break out area, sandpit with shade, adjacent cycling track, Sporting fields, bushwalking, netted swimming area, a steam roller and even a castle that looks like its straight out of a fairy tale. There really is something for everyone at Oatley Park including, young and old, kids, teens, babies and toddlers, cyclists, sporting groups, scooter riders, walkers, joggers and mums with prams.

The historic steam roller is accessible under adult supervision.

After undergoing a total re-development in 2019 the playground was given life and has attracted many visitors since its opening in September. The perfect place to host a birthday party with covered seating and BBQ areas.

Oatley Park really ticks all the boxes for our family! If you were to google Oatley Park or view it on a map you will notice there are a number of access points to the park in which you can drive, walk or cycle. Entrances from Douglas Haig Street and Pamela Ave will allow you a very scenic view of the park however if its purely the playground you’re after then I suggest entering via 1 Dame Mary Gilmore Road and follow the one way road past the sporting field until you reach the playground. Parking is parallel to the park and is unmarked so just be mindful.

TIP: The roadway is ONE WAY and can be a bit difficult to see oncoming traffic, children and cyclists when reversing to leave so always be vigilant.

Oatley Adventure Playground, was constructed using as many natural materials to showcase and pay respect to the surrounding landscape, the playground was a joint project between both the Georges River Council and the NSW Government Open Space and Parklands Program. The adventure playground was designed using the Everyone Can Play guidelines and over 80% of the playground is fully accessible for all abilities.

    Other Features:

The Castle Standing proudly overlooking the Oatley Baths is the magnificent sandstone castle. Built during the Great depression between 1929-1932 it once served as a kiosk but now serves as a lookout over the Georges River and surrounding bushland. Today its purely a great place to explore or have lunch or host n event such as a wedding. You can hire this area by contacting Georges River Council. Underneath you will find not only shelter from bad weather but picnic tables and BBQs. There are also toilets located close by and access to Oatley Baths and further picnic tables is just adjacent.

Oatley Baths are a tranquil netted swimming area popular with Oatley Swimming Club and swimmers of all ages. There is also an area of sand that is perfect for a beach picnic or little bubs. The history is this area dates back to 1919.

    Websters Lookout

Webster Lookout is the ideal place to sit and take in the magnificent view out over the bay and Como Bridge.

Hils Peak Lookout is another lookout just up from the Webster but I recommend Websters more.

Draculas Canteen This is something I came across while researching the park and I haven’t found this myself so if you do please let me know, Id love to know more about it. Apparently there is a large rock overhang you can explore.

    A bit of history…..

If you’re up for a bit more of an adventure outside of the playground there is also a number of walking trails throughout the park, I recommend making the time to explore the parklands outside the playground as the park contains a number of historically important elements. Upon entering the park via Dame Mary Gilmore Rd you will notice the ‘Lone Pine’ tree. The pine tree was planted in 1920 by Owen John Davies, a WWI veteran who grew the tree from a seed he collected from the original Lone Pine in Gallipoli.

The ‘Lone Pine’ in all its glory located at the entrance to the park on Dame Mary Gilmore Drive.

After looking into the history of the park this doesn’t even scrape the surface. I urge you to have a read of the many other features and history of this amazing area.

    Closing Times

    June – August, 6.00pm
    April – October, 7.00pm
    November – March, 8.00pm

The gates are opened at approximately 6:30am all year round and you can drive through the park

The Lowdown on Oatley Adventure Park:

TOILETS: There are toilets, However neither are located at the playground. Your closest option is a 200m walk back to the sports field along a concrete pathway through bushland.

    FENCED: No

PARKING: Yes, parallel parking is located adjacent to the park. Its not marked and it is up to visitors to be mindful of that and park accordingly.

BBQs and PICNIC TABLES: Yes there are 8 Picnic tables and 8 BBQs throughout the playground. Picnic tables are sheltered. There are also BBQs and picnic tables located at the ‘castle’.

SLIDES: Yes, there are 4 slides. The large super slide and the 3 smaller slides for younger children.

SWINGS: Yes, There are 4 swings, one round rope swing and a small toddler swing. I believe on busy days the swings would require some waiting time to secure a turn.

    SANDPIT: Yes

DOGS: Yes Oatley park is a dog friendly park but dogs must be on leash.

SUITABLE FOR: The playground is suitable for a range of ages from toddlers to teens. I wouldn’t suggest its the best option for crawling babies with lots of bark chips around but that doesn’t mean there isn’t areas you could access under supervision. The park overall is suitable for ALL AGES with people young and old accessing the park for many activities including sport, running, cycling, bushwalking, events, bird watching and more.

SHADE: The toddler play area is sheltered with a shade sail but the remainder of the park is exposed. In saying that there is lots of natural shade from the surrounding landscape. Early mornings and late afternoon provide the best shade.

    BINS: Yes

How do I Book for a party / Event: By contacting Georges River Council on (02) 9330 6400 or email them mail@georgesriver.nsw.gov.au. The playground is on a first in best dressed basis but you are able to hire the ‘Castle’.

CLOSEST CAFE: There are no cafes located in the park but do not despair because you really are spoilt for choice at the nearby Oatley township so your closest choices are:

One 2 One Cafe Oatley – which is also very child friendly with a great play area in a good weather. Located at 121 Mulga Road Oatley – 5 Minute Drive.

Bitton Oatley – Another great choice with an outdoor area in good weather and small kids play area with a cubby house. Located at 119a Mulga Road Oatley – 5 Minute Drive.

Edmonds and Greer – A beautiful cafe and homewares shop with adjacent clothing store. Located at 1/97 Mulga Road Oatley – 5 Minutes drive.

    WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE: Partially yes.

OTHER FEATURES: Flying Fox, Concrete pathways for prams and wheelchairs.

Stunning outlook over Oatley Park Bushland

  • The secrets out about this child friendly cafe – Gabriellas at the Grove

Gabriellas at the Grove in the morning light – 31 Seymour Street Hurstville Grove

Located in the sleepy little suburb of Hurstville Grove you will find the family friendly cafe, Gabriella’s at the Grove. Where the coffee is tops, the loaded milkshakes come with fairy floss and the service comes with a smile.

From operating cafes in Sydney for over 20 years, Owner Jason has now settled into the suburbs bringing with him a wealth of cafe knowledge and the local community is reaping the benefits.

Sadly after losing their daughter Gabriella in 2020, Jason and his wife decided it was now or never to bring his dream to life and as a dedication to his little girl, Gabriellas at the Grove was brought to life.

“Gabriella, Carried for a moment, loved for a lifetime. Our daughter, our angel, too beautiful for this earth” – Jason, Gabriella’s at the Grove.

If you have grown up in the area you might remember when this humble little building was once the local corner store. However if you didn’t, fast forward to circa 2020 and the transformation is incredible.

The first thing I noticed about this trendy cafe, aside from the aroma of Toby’s Estate coffee wafting through, is the ample amount of room available. As you walk through the wide open bi-fold doors you are immediately greeted with a large dining table that is ideal for groups of up to 10. The perfect way to celebrate a birthday, host a business lunch or share a tea with your best mum friends.

Planning a more intimate setting, don’t despair you are spoilt for choice with the remaining seating available throughout the cafe.

Prams and high chairs also arent an issue at Gabriellas at the Grove with many high chairs available, change table facilities located in the immaculately clean bathrooms and an extensive children’s menu it makes for a perfect place to share a meal with the kids in tow.

Owner Jason really has thought of everything. Having 4 children of his own he has catered to the needs of the many children that visit the cafe each day. Gone are the days of the only choice for kids being highly processed, deep fried options and say hello to options like mini breaky plates and Gnocchi with Napolitana sauce.

But it doesnt stop there with an extensive chef prepared all inclusive menu for everyone to enjoy with all day breakfast being served and a lunch menu commencing at 11am. You can truly appreciate the thought that has gone into bringing this menu to life. From Shared breakfast boards to Wagyu burgers, Healthy green bowls and Souvlaki plates. It has incorporated all dietary preferences including an abundant amount of choices for gluten free, dairy free and Vegan.

Also, if you’re on the run, then the Hey You App combined with the take away window is going to be your best friend.

    Holiday Workshops

To continue the all inclusive feel Jason has also newly introduced school holiday workshops and we had the oppotunity to attend our first workshop which allowed the kids to assemble their own edible terrariums. Workshops are kept small to allow a hands on experience for each child and participants are then able to leave proudly displaying their creations, that’s if they haven’t been eaten before you finish your coffee! We look forward to what’s coming next holidays.

Gabriellas at the Grove is definitely somewhere I would suggest to meet a girlfriend, sit and pump out some work or enjoy a Sunday brunch with the family. Open 6 days a week, Wednesday to Monday, 6:30am – 4pm. This family run business is a wonderful addition to the local community and I hope to see them flourish for many years to come.

  • Why the all inclusive Ador Reserve Rockdale has parents excited.

Nestled in the ‘sporting hub’ of Rockdale is the all inclusive Ador Reserve Rockdale.

Boasting a modern designed playground for the local community with adjacent skate park, car park, and synthetic turf sporting fields there really is something for everyone including families, sporting groups, skateboarders, cyclists, scooter riders, walkers, mothers with prams and even a toddler play area.

The playground has significant structural climbing equipment for the more adventurous children aswell as incorporating nature play with sandpits, a shared cycling and walking track, childrens bike path and pump track and again the adjacent skatepark.

The area has been smartly designed by taking cues from the unique surroundings of the Roockdale wetlands. The design incorporates a range of water saving urban design principles and a large number of the diverse plantings will also help to reduce urban heat while providing shaded ambience to paths and the playground areas. Shade sales are also erect over the playground and bbq areas.

The park is surrounded not only by state of the art sporting fields but also a cycle track and small pump track and architectural designed toilet block. If this is not extreme enough for your tribe then why not give the adjacent skate park a run for its money.

The skate park includes two large skate bowls and many other concrete and metal structures allowing the kids to grind, kick flip and fakie until their hearts content.

Elements of nature play are also significant throughout the park and with interpretive signage and artwork explaining the endemic landscape character, significant local flora and fauna and providing a historical timeline of the wetlands its hard not to appreciate how this smartly designed park the softens the grand play euiptment with its tranquil surroundings.

The Lowdown on Ador Reserve Rockdale:

Fenced: PARTIALLY. However the playground itself is located well away from main roads but is partially open to the carpark.

There is also a seniors exercise area that includes a range of euiptment for exercise.

This week we chat to local Mumma Jess Armstrong. Jess is a recent first time mum and has recently moved to the area.

Thank you Jess for taking part in Meet a Local Mumma and keeping our aim to connect local mums strong.

How Long have you lived in the area and why do you enjoy it?

We have Lived in the area for 5 months now and we like it because its quiet, everything we need is close by and its not too far from the highway for work.

How many children do you have and what are their name/s and ages if you wish to share?

We have one little boy Jackson, he’s two months old.

What’s your favourite beach or waterway?

Favourite beach so far is Cronulla but we havent gotten out much since moving here to be honest.

    Favourite Local Cafe & Why?

The Harvest Ground at Penshurst. They serve a good coffee and big breakfast!

What are your wet weather plans?

Our wet weather plans are trying not to eat and binge watch television Haha

Are you a Working mum or a SAHM (Stay at home mum)? Tell us about your business if you’d like!

I’m currently on maternity leave until July.

What would you say is the biggest challenge of motherhood?

I think the biggest challenge of motherhood for me was the PPA (post Partum Anxiety) and being unable to walk after birth for the first 4 weeks. Everything else just feels so natural and light.

You’re standard on a desert island and you find a satellite phone, it has one bar battery. Who are you calling and why?

I would call search and rescue because hopefully they could somehow satellite track me and then I could speak to my loved ones after I had been rescued Haha

What would you say is the best part of motherhood?

The best part of motherhood is seeing my baby smile and just hearing him make any noise really.

What would you say keeps you sane while navigating motherhood?

Keeping as much routine as possible and being pre prepared helps keep me sane.

What are your interests / Hobbies?

My Interests and hobbies are fitness, eating, Disney, red wine and going out.

What is your idea of the perfect night out?

My perfect night out would be a nice dinner with drinks and a stage show or night markets.

What advice would you offer a fellow mum or first time mum?

My advice would be to not buy heaps of new baby clothes, luckily I didn’t buy too many but my baby was almost a 000 after being born so he was never going to fit the 00000 clothes I did buy.

Lastly, is there anything else you would like to share with us?

If there are any park meet ups with babies around the same age I would be interested in attending to meet people if the rain stops.

To connect with Jess and many other like-minded mums join our community group here.
